Everyone will be so excited if you decide to host a gender reveal themed baby shower, as friends, colleagues, and loved ones will be dying to find out whether the mom-to-be is expecting a little boy or girl. So, if mom has given you permission, the baby shower is the perfect time to reveal the baby’s gender.
If you are planning a gender reveal themed baby shower, this guide will help you with decorations, food, and game ideas for the perfect party.
Party Decorations
You’ll need gender reveal-themed decorations to help set the tone of the baby shower, so plan to have lots of blue and pink touches here and there! Two simple ways to decorate are making blue and pink confetti lanterns and mini diaper cakes. Just follow the instructions below, and your baby shower decorations are almost ready.
Confetti Lanterns
What you’ll need:
- Paper lanterns in the size of your choice
- Crepe or tissue paper in pink and blue
- Scissors
- Double-sided tape
- Twine or string
- Freezer paper
- Confetti in pink or blue (depending on the gender – pink for a girl, blue for a boy)
Instructions:
- Cut strips of both the pink and blue crepe paper that are 1.5” wide and long enough to reach around the lantern. Then cut fringe on one side of the strips.
- Take the round paper lantern, and apply long strips of double-sided tape vertically from top to bottom.
- Wrap the fringed strips of crepe paper around the lantern horizontally, from bottom to top. Alternate in pink and blue strips, or do one lantern in all pink and another in all blue.
- Cut a circle from a piece of freezer paper that is slightly bigger than the opening of the lantern. Tape a piece of twine to the dull side of the freezer paper. Cut two slits on opposite sides of the freezer paper circle, so it can lay flat inside the lantern’s wire opening.
- Insert the circle, twine side sticking out through the bottom of the lantern. Flatten it with a wooden spoon to ensure confetti can’t fall out.
- Fill the lantern with two giant handfuls of blue or pink confetti, and then hang the lantern high with the twine hanging down below.
- When it’s time for the big gender reveal moment, the mom- or parents-to-be can stand underneath it and pull the string, releasing a stream of colored confetti, which announces the baby’s gender to all the guests.

Mini Diaper Cakes
What you’ll need:
- 7 Pampers Swaddlers diapers (size N or 1) per diaper cake
- Pink and blue ribbon
- Rubber bands
- Pink pipe cleaners
- Several washcloths or bibs in pink and blue (at least two per diaper cake)
- Hot glue gun
Instructions:
- Start with 7 diapers. Roll each from front to back, and secure the roll with a rubber band.
- Cluster the rolled Pampers diapers together, and secure them with a rubber band, leaving a bit of room at the center of the cake. Stuff the center of each cake with rolled up bibs and/or washcloths.
- Wrap pink or blue ribbon around the cluster to hide the rubber band, and secure the ribbon ends with hot glue.
- To make the bow tie and butterfly, first make the bow base in both pink and blue colors. Lay your pink or blue washcloth flat and fold it into a small rectangle. Cinch the center of the rectangle with your fingers, and secure it with a small rubber band.
- To make the bow tie: Cut a small piece of blue ribbon, and wrap it around the center of the bow securing it with hot glue. Hot glue one bow tie to each blue mini diaper cake.
To make the butterfly: Take the pink bow and fold a pipe cleaner halfway around its center. Thread the back half of the pipe cleaner through the ribbon on each pink mini diaper cake. Twist the pipe cleaner together once or twice to secure. Coil the loose ends to create butterfly antennae.
- Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have enough bow ties and butterflies to decorate each of your mini diaper cakes.
- Stack the mini diaper cakes in a pyramid to make a gender reveal centerpiece, or scatter the cakes around the party as decorations.

Food Ideas
Your gender reveal baby shower also needs food and drinks that tie in with the theme. Bake some cookies decorated with pink and blue edible sprinkles, or bake vanilla cupcakes using pink or blue food dye. You can also buy cookies, dip them in pink or blue icing, and cover them with edible glitter to decorate. And, you can always put out bowls of pink and blue lollipops or candies to delight your guests. Match your party drinks to your theme, as well, by adding a few drops of pink food coloring to one bowl of punch, and a few drops of blue food dye to another.
You can also use the food you provide to reveal the gender. For example, bake a cake, and before you decorate the outside, cut a hole in the middle from underneath. Fill that space with blue or pink candies or cream (in whichever color matches the baby’s gender). From the outside, decorate the cake with pink and blue decorations, or create a question mark symbol on top with icing. When the cake is cut, your guests will finally find out whether the mom-to-be is expecting a little boy or girl. You can also do this in mini size, so that guests find out the gender of the baby as they take a bite of their cupcake.
If each guest has been asked to bring a plate of food to share, you may suggest that they decorate their plate of food in blue or pink – whichever gender they predict the baby will be.
Game Ideas
Another creative way to reveal the gender is to make the announcement through a game.
Here you’ll find the gender reveal game supplies you’ll need, plus step-by-step instructions for a cute gender reveal idea.
What you’ll need:
- 5” wide pink and blue ribbon
- Elastic bands
- Alligator clips or safety pins
- Pink pipe cleaners
- Hot glue gun
- Chalk board or flip chart (optional)
Instructions:
- Cut 12” of ribbon. Fold the ribbon several times (as seen in the video above), and cinch the bow in the middle, securing it with a clear, elastic band. You’ll need one bow per guest, so make enough in a mix of blue and pink.
- To finish the blue bow tie, take a piece of ribbon, and wrap it around the center, securing the back with hot glue.
- Then, grab the pink bows. Wrap a pink pipe cleaner around the bow to secure it, and coil the ends to create butterfly antennae.
- Attach an alligator clip or safety pin to the back of each butterfly and bow tie.
- Display the bow tie and butterfly clips in front of a chalkboard at the baby shower. On the chalkboard, create a tally, one side for "boy" (bow ties) and the other side for "girl" (butterflies). As guests arrive, they will make their prediction on the chalkboard and wear either a butterfly or bow tie clip. At the end of the party, the mom-to-be will announce the baby’s gender, and the guests will enjoy seeing who predicted correctly! You may also want to provide prizes for those who guessed right.
